The upcoming Giro del Trentino Melinda (21-24 April) has all the ingredients to be one of the most spectacular stage races of the season. As usual, the route is characterized by numerous climbs and the start list is slowly beginning to shape-up, with great expectation arountd Astana’s Fabio Aru looking forward an exciting duel with Richie Porte (Team Sky), both focused on Giro d’Italia pink jersey.
“The Giro del Trentino Melinda is a very important race ahead of the Corsa Rosa” – Aru said – “It’s a race I have always loved, even before turning pro, as it suits my characteristics. I know Trentino and its roads, and since the beginning of the season, when I talked with the team about my schedule, I expressed my desire to race there.”
The 24-year-old from Villacidro (Medio Campidano) will look to follow in the footsteps of his countrymanVincenzo Nibali, who won the 2013 Giro del Trentino, before going on to take the victory at the Giro d’Italia. This precedent will surely boost the confidence of the young rider from Sardinia. For Aru, it will be the third time he’ll ride the Giro del Trentino, in each of the previous occasions finishing in the top 10.
“I came here for the first time two years ago and finished fourth. I remember Vincenzo (Nibali) was not yet in top form, but still managed to win, and then repeated that victory at the Giro d’Italia. My goal is to improve my condition there. I intend to honor the race and aim to get the best result”, Astana’s rider explained.
At the Giro del Trentino Melinda, Fabio Aru will face a fierce opposition from Richie Porte. The 30-year-old Australian, recent winner of Paris-Nice, is enjoying one of the best seasons of his career and will start the Italian race as favorite. The two rivals will have the opportunity to test themselves on an ideal course: after the opening team time trial, the fireworks will come during the queen-stage to Brentonico, and will continue in the next two stages: “I have studied the course and after the team time trial, there will be three stages that can help me get a good result in the GC. The stage to Brentonico, with the Monte Velo climb, promises to be very challenging”, Aru said.
