Champions, values and eco-sustainability: the Tour of the Alps keeps rising

The Euroregional stage race (April 16-20), presented today in Trento, will be opened by three days in Trentino. The eve in Arco will be followed by the spectacular finishes in Folgaria and Alpe di Pampeago: everything is ready for the challenge of Froome, Aru and Pinot

The Tour of the Alps return where everything had started. The second year of the new Euroregional project will get off on April 16th in Arco, where the organizing company of the Giro del Trentino – and now the Tour of the Alps – GS Alto Garda was incepted and is still based. The race has been presented today in Trento, in the main site of the Provincia Autonoma di Trento.

Big expectations surround the 2.HC stage race, that from April 16th to 20th will bring the top names of international cycling to the mountains and the beauty of Tirol, Alto Adige and Trentino for five days of exciting challenges, all ready to be enjoyed all over the World thanks to an extensive live TV coverage.

Taking part in the press conference were Trentino’s Tourism Assessor Michele Dallapiccola, Trentino Marketing’s administrator Maurizio Rossini, the Trentino stage cities representatives – Garda Trentino SpA President Marco Benedetti, Alpe Cimbra Tourism Board President Michael Rech and Tesero’s sports assessor Silvia Vaia, – athletes Nicola Conci and Iuri Filosi and former professionals Francesco Moser, Maurizio Fondriest, Gilberto Simoni and Alessandro Bertolini. Doing the honors on the occasion was GS Alto Garda President Giacomo Santini.

THE CHAMPIONS LAND IN ARCO

Born in 2017 as ambitious cross-border project uniting three territories, the Tour of the Alps is now ready for its second edition to take off, with an impressive World-class line-up, further elevating the prestigious 40-year legacy of the Giro del Trentino.

Twenty teams, including nine World Team, and first-tier names like Chris Froome, Fabio Aru, Thibaut Pinot, and also Miguel Angel Lopez, Domenico Pozzovivo, Louis Meintjes, Leopold König, George Bennett. Along the 716 km of the Tour of the Alps, from Arco to the grand finale in Innsbruck, those and more standout characters won’t stand with tuning up for their assault to the Giro d’Italia’s pink jersey: teams come to the Tour of the Alps to win it, and Team Sky shows it, as the British outfit won the last three editions with three different leaders.

VALUES IN THE RACE

To limitate the meaning of the Tour of the Alps to the sole sports side of it would be an understatement. The event signifies the virtuous union of three territories and their populations, Tirol, Südtirol and Trentino, gathering around the common values of the Euregio that represent the base of the Tour of the Alps project.

Sports embody important values for us, such as fair competition, quality, healthy lifestyle: Trentino is proud to host the start of such an important and prestigious edition,” stated Trentino Tourism Assessor  Michele Dallapiccola.

“Being originary from Trentino, we feel proud to see Giro del Trentino bloom into such an ambitious and important Euroregional project, rewarded by the participation of champions from all over the World,” said Trentino Marketing Administrator Maurizio Rossini. “The union with our territorial partner, and the choice of basing the initiative on values we strongly share, allowed us to go for bigger and more ambitious goals without surrendering the identity of this event, one of the most cherished by the fans and the insiders.”

Another sign of this continuity is the increasingly solid relationship with Trentino’s brands like Melinda, Casse Rurali Trentine and Phoenix, that also in 2018 will be showing on – respectively – the overall leader’s jersey (fuchsia), the KOM jersey (green) and intermediate sprints’ jersey (red), all of those supplied by Northwave, whilst the Fiat Lüftner logo will be on the youth classification’s white jersey.

The new partnership with Fiat also involves one of the key themes of the Tour of the Alps, sustainable mobility: Tour of the Alps’ Fiat 500L are methane-fueled, to reduce the environmental impact, and the race caravan will be able to rely on the support of Federmetano, promoting the usage of alternative fuels – like the A22 Brenner highway.

EUREGIO EXPERIENCE: AN ALL-DIFFERENT MUSIC

Another interesting novelty is the partnership with UploadSounds, a i music platform dedicated to under-35 emerging talents and music professionals of the Euregio. This year, the songs participating in the contest will be the soundtrack of the departures of all the stages of Tour of the Alps, completing the authentic Euregio Experience for everybody to live: the race organization has worked extensively to involve the territories and the stage committee’s to promote the event and encourage participation to the Euroregional event.

Unlike the last edition, that had moved from Kufstein to finish in Trento, Tour of the Alps rides northwards this time, taking off from the upper banks of the Lake Garda. On Sunday, April 15th, the eve day will unfold with the teams’ official presentation at 17.30, and the favorites’ press conference one hour earlier. The day after, April 16th, the race will take in a first testing finish in Folgaria, while stage 2 from Lavarone to Alpe di Pampeago/Fiemme will present the only uphill finish, on an ascent often seen also at the Giro d’Italia.

After a third stage all within the Südtirol region from Auer to Meran, stage 4 starts from Klausen to cross the Austrian borders and end up to Lienz. The last Tour of the Alps stage, from Rattenberg to Innsbruck, display an exciting finale with two laps over the circuit where the UCI Road World Championships will stage their final showdown among the contenders for the rainbow jerseys.

IN MEMORY OF MICHELE SCARPONI

Still about values, generosity will have a special place in this Tour of the Alps’ edition. Indeed, this was one of the outstanding qualities Michele Scarponi used to show in the race (and out of it), and that not will be rewarded with the award named after him.

At the Tour of the Alps, the Team-up Award Souvenir Michele Scarponi will be given, each day, to the team capable of the best display of collective work and selfless approach. The winning team will receive a check to be donated to a charity association at the start of the following day.

In the memory of Michele Scarponi, who passed away in a road accident on the day after the Tour of the Alps where he had won the first stage in Innsbruck, a mass will be celebrated on Friday April 20th on the finish line in the Tyrolean capital by the Bishop of Innsbruck.

A WORLDWIDE MEDIA COVERAGE

The Tour of the Alps is collecting global interest, and it is showed by over 120 press representatives already accredited and over 100 Countries where the live TV coverage will be distributed for 90 minutes each day. The TV production will be made by PMG Sport, as part of the “Ciclismo Cup” project promoted by the Lega Ciclismo Professionistico.
