Tour of the Alps flies high in Südtirol/Alto Adige

Euro-regional stage race (April 21-25) will face three pivotal days in Südtirol/Alto Adige: Sterzing/Vipiteno expects explosive finishers, while Furkelpass/Passo Furcia and Vierschachberg/Monte Versciaco highlight stage 3's route to Innichen/San Candido. Stage 4 will cross Sexten/Sesto Pusteria, hometown of tennis star Jannik Sinner

Following 2024's memorable start from Würth headquarters in Neumarkt/Egna, Südtirol/Alto Adige prepares to host three crucial stages of the 2025 Tour of the Alps (April 21-25), promising dynamic and unpredictable racing.

After opening in Trentino, the euro-regional race resumes from Mezzolombardo on Tuesday, April 22. The peloton soon enters Südtirol/Alto Adige en route to Sterzing-Ratschings/Vipiteno-Racines after 178 kilometers – 2025 #TotA's longest and most demanding stage with 3,750 meters of climbing.

From Piana Rotaliana's flat start in Trentino, riders tackle the Petersberg/Monte San Pietro KOM before a series of sharp climbs and descents designed to exhaust the field before the crucial finale. Entering Sterzing/Vipiteno, racers face two laps of a 16-kilometer circuit featuring the Obertelfes/Telves di Sopra climb – ideal territory for punchy attackers.

"The #TotA showcases Sterzing/Vipiteno and our region internationally," said Alois Bacher, President of the Sterzing/Vipiteno - Pfitsch/Val di Vizze - Freienfeld/Campo di Trens Tourism Board. "We're honored to host cycling's elite for both a finish and next day's start. Beyond enhancing our active tourism credentials, this event boosts our local economy and engages our community. It perfectly highlights our mountain landscapes and regional hospitality."

"The Tour of the Alps unites world-class teams for spectacular alpine racing. From mountain meadows to vibrant towns, our scenery provides an exceptional backdrop. Sterzing-Ratschings/Vipiteno-Racines welcomes #TotA as an opportunity to showcase our destination to cycling enthusiasts worldwide," added Thomas Gschliesser, Ratschings/Racines Tourism Board Director.

Stage 3 departs Sterzing-Ratschings/Vipiteno-Racines on Wednesday, April 23, covering 145 kilometers to Innichen/San Candido. After a rapid start, the race transforms at the inaugural Untermoi/Antermoia ascent. A flowing descent leads to the day's major test: Furkelpass/Passo Furcia, where the final 4 kilometers maintain punishing double-digit gradients.

Descending Furkelpass/Passo Furcia, riders glimpse Innichen/San Candido before confronting the Vierschachberg/Monte Versciaco KOM. From its summit, roughly 11 kilometers out, the route traces the ridgeline before a technical descent into Innichen/San Candido in the 3 Zinnen Dolomites/3 Cime Dolomiti region.

The 48th Tour of the Alps continues through Südtirol/Alto Adige during Thursday's stage 4, from Sillian to Obertilliach. Leaving Osttirol, the race passes Winnebach/Prato alla Drava, Vierschach/Versciaco, Innichen/San Candido, and Toblach/Dobbiaco before briefly entering Veneto.

After 50 kilometers, #TotA returns to Südtirol/Alto Adige toward Kreuzbergpass/Passo Monte Croce Comelico. The descent takes riders through Sexten/Sesto Pusteria, home to world tennis number 1 Jannik Sinner, before returning via Innichen/San Candido, Vierschach/Versciaco and Winnebach/Prato alla Drava en route to Austria.

"3 Zinnen Dolomites/3 Cime Dolomiti offers cyclists everything from scenic routes to demanding climbs. Welcoming the Tour of the Alps to Innichen/San Candido spotlights our region's heart," said Dieter Wurmböck, Innichen/San Candido Tourism Board President. "Cycling creates unique emotions, and this prestigious race stands among 2025's premier sporting events."

"Innichen/San Candido's cycling heritage includes legendary Giro d'Italia stages and the annual Eroica Dolomiti. The Tour of the Alps continues this tradition while reinforcing our position as a premier outdoor sports destination. This event's media coverage perfectly showcases our region's dynamic, cycling-focused appeal to international audiences."
